Are You Up To Date?
Are you keeping your computer up-to date, free of spyware, viruses and unneeded temporary files? You need to check each is working properly, as your computer will become slow, and will be a security threat.
There are approximately 3 new viruses made each day. If you do not update your virus scanners, you will be at risk! Don’t rely on viruses being scanned by your ISP, get your own personal virus scanner. The same goes for your spyware scanners. Make sure you do an update before each scan.
Are you still using your firewall? Check to make sure it is working properly. Also check that it is still running next time you start up your computer, and that it is blocking programs you do not want to access your PC.
I knew a person that said to me, “I don’t care if someone is accessing my computer, I have nothing to hide”, what they didn’t realise was that someone can see all your personal files, your passwords, everything! Your online bank account passwords, your e-mails, your personal information are all at risk if you don’t protect yourself. Also, programs that access your PC to get your information, are actually using the PC itself, therefore slowing it down, including your internet speed.
Temporary files are easy to forget about. They accumulate every time you use the computer, and slow your PC down. Make sure you scan your PC for temporary files regularly to maintain optimum speed.
Also, remember to keep the defragmenting up. Ensure to defrag at least once a month, to keep your computer running as fast as it possibly can go.
There may be some hidden programs that you don’t know about running when you start up your PC. These will slow down your PC without you knowing they are running. They may be a perfectly safe program, but they are unneeded. Check to see what is running in the background when you start up.
If you have recently bought a new PC, make sure that you have the correct virus and security software to protect yourself. Just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s going to be secure.
To make sure your PC is fully protected, contact your local Computer Troubleshooter. They will be glad to help.
